We start by catching the ferry from downtown Auckland to Rangitoto Island wharf, about a fifteen minute trip.

Then a one hour walk to Islington Bay, Motutapu Island or a one hour direct track up to Rangitoto Summit. Plenty of lava formations including lava caves.

Motutapu Island is mostly privately farmed.

This will be a full day and well worth the trip.
